Hissing Organs

Hissing Organs dives into the anatomic, sound and affective qualities of our internal organs. Movement unfolds from a sensitive plane in relation to sculptures that evoke organic textures and sounds, creating a tactile and viscous atmosphere, impregnated by fluids and breathing… How to connect internal sensations with those outside? What marks the boundaries between matter and body? Sacs and tubes hang, make air circulate, transport and make transparent. Bodies blur, sigh, sing, melt and put themselves back together, creating a living landscape where all systems are interconnected.

Maria Tamarit and Sara Willa are founders and creators of the transdisciplinary company Matteria, with three other artists. Maria is a performer and creator, a student of Body-Mind Centering. She studied a Master’s in Performing Practice and Visual Culture. She also has a degree in Fine Arts and Contemporary Dance. The body is the fundamental axis of her work, taking into account its plasticity and perception. Sara is a transdisciplinary American artist. She trained in Fine Arts and Dance at Pomona College (Los Angeles) and the Conservatorio Superior de Valencia. She works with sculpture, installation, and dance to explore porosities between material bodies, human and others.

Políticas visuales queer. El futuro como ilusión heteronormativa

(performance)

Políticas visuales queer. El futuro como ilusión heteronormativa (Queer visual politics. The future as a heteronormative illusion) is a creative project developed by Álvaro Romero at El Consulado (València). The dificulty that dissident identities face in envisioning an optimal political and vital horizon responds to the lack of perspective and imagination with which we must constantly calibrate our present. Through this performance I ponder on the capacity of the imagination to create reality. While it is true that what is real is cemented by the images that represent it, we cannot help but wonder what happens to those images that do not exist and, therefore, do not create other realities. In what other ways can new visualities be engendered?

Álvaro Romero (he/him) was born in Tarragona in 1998. He studied Fine Arts at the Polytechnic University of Valencia and later completed a Master’s Degree in Artistic Production and Research at the University of Barcelona. He currently combines PhD research at the University of Barcelona with the development of artistic projects, in which life and artistic practice are constantly intermingled. Through writing and video he carries out projects that reflect on gender dissidence, the visuality of other futures and the questioning of heteronormative visual culture with the aim of celebrating a collective identity.

Creation and direction: Álvaro Romero

With the collaboration of: El Consulado (València), especially Sofía Asencio and Tomàs Aragay and Antic Teatre (Barcelona).
Project selected in the call for Residencies at El Consulado 2023, within the framework of Cultura Resident, an artistic residency program of the Consorci de Museus de la Generalitat Valenciana.

Sara Aliana

Técnicas de Evasión y Escape

(performance)

I spend hours reading the titles of the catalogues and thinking that I’m surrounded by modern art exhibitions that watch me from the shelves and are holding me hostage.

Técnicas de Evasión y Escape is a lecture performance that collects the research developed at Residencias El Consulado, and that explores the possibilities of escape from my work space. Starting from the experience as a sales assistant in a museum shop, the idea is for my body to levitate and escape through the room’s non-ceiling. Throughout the process I question the agency of the body within the work space, the frustrations derived from the precariousness of cultural work and the possibility of proposing alternatives through art.

Sara Aliana Llorca. Born in La Vila Joiosa (Alicante) but based in Valencia, Sara develops her artistic practice around the concepts of care and affection. In her practice, the physical body is manifested as a finite and vulnerable component, an organism that needs to be sustained so we can build and nurture our relationships. Humour and irony are used to create intimate and accessible spaces, to structure new collective narratives. She has recently curated Aceleración de los cuerpos sumergidos, an exhibition at Las Cigarreras (Alicante), together with Leticia Cano, Carolina Fuentes and Sara Marhuenda, and concluded a residency at Residencias El Consulado with her performative project Técnicas de Evasión y Escape. She is part of two Valencian artistic collectives, EdredonLab and las mediocre.

El Consulado is a work space centering on live arts, visual arts and all their derivatives, located in Fonteta de Sant Lluís (Horta sud-València). A former warehouse for agricultural machinery, it is a large, open space measuring 285m2 with a 9m x 10m inset parquet floor for physical body work, a fixed cinema screen, a washroom with toilet and shower, a bedroom for residents and a kitchen area.

The aims of El Consulado are to house and provide support for creation and training projects based on live or visual arts. To propose and facilitate residencies for artists and collectives to work in the space. To be open to the cultural and creative developments of the city and its surroundings so as to accommodate and provide visibility for a wide range of practices, events and activities.
