Grassroots Culture under electoral discussion

Grassroots Culture under electoral discussion

Date and time: Thursday 9 May from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Place: Nau Bòstik, c/. Ferran Turné 1-10, Sagrera quarter.

Cultura de Base Barcelona (Grassroots Culture Barcelona – CB) invite you to take part in a discussion between the representatives of progressive political forces and agents from the culture sector. We believe that with the election campaign in full swing and elections scheduled in just a few days, this is a good time for the different political parties to tell us directly what their plans are and how they understand and perceive cultural policy, and to be able to do so in free and open dialogue with any agents and actors from the culture sector who would also like to take part.

For this reason we propose a horizontal, assembly-based encounter where, rather than just being able to explain their electoral programmes with regard to culture, there is the possibility of opening up a two-way exchange where we all have the chance to discover the needs and proposals we would like to see implemented, while at the same time creating a space for discussion and communal working on a potential new term during which we would like the various progressive political parties – each from their own perspective – to hear and adopt our requests and needs.

We would like to count on your presence and representation.

CB is a free and independent citizen-led initiative that emerged from the real need for a local infrastructure: people, organisations, venues and projects with links to art, education, culture, audiences and social actualities. The organisations that make up CB would like it to surface, be recognised and placed in the public agenda; we want to expose, complicitly and with a view to bringing about change, the things that institutional interest or the media frequently hide: precarity, low budgets, decrease in subsidies, increasing complexity in applying for these, raises in rents or difficulties in accessing work spaces where we can develop and encourage practice.

CB is also a call to all independent projects in the city, so we can get to know each other and support each other in our diversity. We’re working towards inclusion and networking. We are an open, self-organised collective, our structure is based on co-operation, and we need to find a place where we can come together and defend the claims of the different venues, associations, artists, companies and, most of all, citizens who make up CB.
