DANSES ROMÀNTIQUES (ROMANTIC DANCES) is a solo, created and performed by Guillem Mont de Palol, with direction, scenery and costumes by Jorge Dutor, in which we meddle with the conventions of romantic ballet to try and heal certain cruelties we have inherited. We want to question the way in which the concept of romantic love stands for individuality, fatality, the idea of fragility and even the type of heroic victimhood that justifies brutish behavior. Our revision is based on aesthetics: the audience are put in their places one by one, becoming parts of an impressive mise-en-scène in a playful setting. A stage device that is an organic, breathing scenography and that constellates the tragedy of Giselle.
We are Jorge Dutor and Guillem Mont de Palol, creators, dancers and performers. We work at the limits of different disciplines such as dance, architecture, theatre and opera, and their fields of social and political influence. We’re strongly committed to a place that others just pass through: remaining on the edges, rather than in the centre, is an ideological position. Our performance practice crosses languages and develops something energetic and empathic: we use humour, the absurd, repetition and music to bring live arts closer to all kinds of audiences with the aim of having them all leave dancing the conga and repeating what they’ve seen when they get home. We’ve been in this together since 2009, in collaboration with theatres, art centres and festivals across Europe and Latin America.
