Is change necessary? Is change possible? Do we really want to change? Should we transcend? Do we need to change our comfortable positions for uncomfortable ones, and to abandon the calmness of our previous existence? Is calm, is comfort a mistake? Do we need to save ourselves? Are we destined to change the world?… This is the kind of question I’d ask myself if I were a bear in the water. A bear in the water, with its slow steps, knows how to supply its own needs.
Arantzazu López Medina and David Franch Farré got together for this project with the aim of creating a performance piece. We pooled our enthusiasm and curiosity and brought in our own skills and experiences from our work and our lives. Coming as we do from different kinds of performance, we wanted to create something called “Bears in the Water”.
Arantzazu López Medina was born and lives in Barcelona. She has been swaying her hips since she can remember. She started at home on her first birthday, climbing on to the table to dance for the whole family. This was followed by endless sessions in competitive gymnastics, school end of term shows, performances in her cousins’ dining room, drama classes, lessons in contemporary dance… But what she really wants is to be devoured by the tiger, for the tiger to devour her dark flesh. If she could choose, she’d be… more… more… More.
David Franch Farré has studied in many places and with many people. He learned some things while others eluded him. Tired of limiting himself to working in construction and partying, he started doing drama and very quickly got together with others on the streets to show his skills. With or without money, he does whatever he likes because his word is law. He has neither queen nor country nor anyone to understand him but he is still the king. If he could choose he’d like to be… taller.
