Anna Cima: my student’s thesis is about entropy
Me : about what?
A.C.: entropy
Me : what’s entropy? I was talking about utopia…
A.C: oh, utopia! right! I understood entropy …
Me : what’s entropy?
A.C: wntropy is chaos, all hell breaking loose
Me : and your student’s thesis is about that?
A.C: well, it’s about algebraic entropy, about how things get complicated; well, it’s difficult to explain.. entropy in a thermodynamic context is the tendency towards molecular chaos.
Me : pretty cool, entropy
A.C: entropy is super fashionable.
Me : what does that mean, being fashionable?
A.C: in mathematics.
Me : and what does it mean if something is fashionable in mathematics?
A.C: there are a lot of recent publications on the subject. they’re ideas that grab us researchers and then we get to work on them, you know?
