ANTIC TEATRE'S COMMUNITY ARTS PROJECT with children and teenagers: Mou-te Babel
Movement and dance
Direction: Isabel Ollé and Quim Cabanillas
MOU-TE BABEL
Aware of the problems existing within our neighbourhood and after collaborating in various local projects that included children and teenagers, we decided that it was important and necessary to work with this collective. For this reason the Mou-te Babel (Move yourself, Babel) project was initiated.
Within our neighbourhood there is a range of very different childhood realities and they usually don’t mix. There are many children who spend a great part of their time on the street without their basic needs being fulfuilled, while others, apparently better established, lack emotional support. We therefore believe it is necessary to create a project in which these different realites can intermingle from an artistic and cultural perspective, allowing access to a broad range of tools and values for personal and social growth.
We want our local children and teenagers to have an active and equal participation in the artistic and cultural life of the city.
The artistic tool used for working with this collective is dance, as it encourages knowledge of one’s own body, has health benefits, helps teach correct breathing and moving confidently within a space. It is also a tool that can help to awaken artistic sensibilities and at the same time personal sensibilities; it is, therefore, an enriching instsrument for personal growth. It helps us work from our emotions, to recognise them and name them or give them movement. Dance becomes the guiding element in team-work, equality, diversity and self-confidence.
In Mou-te Babel all the aspects of performance creation are touched on, meaning that everyone writes the dramaturgy, performs, directs, creates sets, lighting, sound, etc.
One part of this process takes place in workshops, and the other in the Antic Teatre theatre hall, where eventually the finalised piece will be staged and performed twice in front of an audience. There will also be field trips to view performance arts during the course of the year.
The artistic team and project coordinators are Isabel Ollé and Quim Cabanillas, the same people who have been working on Antic Teatre’s other community project with senior citizens for the past few years.
