Race, Space, and the Creation of Inequality

The indiscriminate use of hydrocarbons and compulsive need for possessions has devastated the planet. The economic and political systems in use for the last 600 years have proved to be unsustainable, inefficient and remarkably destructive. Today’s empires have used violence to acquire the rich natural resources and lands of countless countries without any concern for their inhabitants; they have exterminated entire nations and forced thousands of people to leave their homes and find refuge in countries which in many cases are the aggressors. This massive migration is condemned by more fortunate countries that, ironically, are frequently the real creators of the problem.

European expansionism has resulted in racial segregation and discrimination as well as the rapid depletion of natural resources.

We are now faced with the challenge of re-defining perspectives and attitudes in order to save our planet and ourselves before it is too late. We must therefore re-define historical accounts by telling the truth.

This performance action is a look at the preconceived mentality and attitudes that have governed Western dominant groups for more than 500 years. The consequences are ever more evident, and the repercussions catastrophic.

We do not aim to change history. We want to talk about history from an honest, educated and genuine perspective, starting with the cruelties described by Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas in his book A Short History of the Destruction of the Western Indies, which was presented to Felipe II, Prince of Asturias, in the 15th century. In the context of this performance, the events related in the book mark the beginning of the depletion of the planet and the current era of displacement and segregation.
