ANTONELLO FARETTA & JOHN GIORNO + GIANLUCA ABBATE & EDUARD ESCOFFET

presentation

For this session we’re bringing together two filmmakers and two poets whose paths have crossed on several previous occasions. All four have a common connection with poetry, either image-based or word-based, and all four are have a common connection to Basilicata, a region in the south of Italy which is where Antonello Faretta lives, where John Giorno’s ancestors were from and where Gianluca Abbate and Eduard Escoffet filmed Cos Endins.

We’ll be joined by Eduard Escoffet, who, as the common link between the four, will express these connections in words.

JOHN GIORNO
New York, 1936-2019. One of the most represantative examples of American contemporary poetry. With his innnovative way of interpreting poetry, John Giorno turned spoken word into high art and changed the way the world perceived poetry. In 1965, he initiated Giorno Poetry Systems, which incorporated electronica and multimedia into poetry and created new spaces for poetry to connect with new audiences. Throughout his career, Giorno worked alongside many famous visual and contemporary artists, including Andy Warhol, Bob Rauschemberg, Jasper Johns, Brion Gysin, John Cage, Robert Mapplethorpe and William S. Burroughs, who said: “Giorno poses questions at the limits of what is bearable. His litanies of the subconscious reverberate in our minds and verbalise our own thoughts.”

In 1984, inspired by the fact that many of his friends had died from AIDS, he began the AIDS Treatment Project, an attempt to fight the epidemic by raising funds for emergencies. During the following years, Giorno took part in Ron Mann’s film, Poetry in Motion, an essay on the work of the major contemporary poets, that contains not just their writing but also performances by Giorno, Amiri Baraka, Charles Bukowski, William S. Burroughs, John Cage, Allen Ginsberg, Michael Ondaatje, Ed Sandra, Gary Snyder and Tom Waits. Until his death, Giorno toured all over the world (squares, museums, bookshops, events) to introduce audiences to his performances.

Cos endins
2019_9 min_VR film / mono channel
Direction: Gianluca Abbate
Poetry and performance: Eduard Escoffet
Sound design: Eduard Escoffet

Behind numerous generational repetitions and under all the layers, there’s a place beyond each individual’s skin, inside, that cannot be denied: the cavity that reiterates each person’s intimate and particular identity. The voice running through this film takes us to various places in Matera, from tourist hotspots to the inner spaces of the city (grottoes, caves, cisterns, tracks, rooms) and the body’s own unassailable space: pleaure and desire for other bodies that no one can erase. Cos endins is a joint project by Gianluca Abbate (video, image) and Eduard Escoffet (text, voices) for Matera 2019 and Rete Cine Basilicata, as part of the MaTerre 2019 project to create virtual reality films about identity. It won the Goethe award at the Berlin Zebra Poetry Film Festival in 2020.
