Session 10

LA MASSANA: EXPERIMENTAL VIDEO

The videos screened in this session are some of the exercises from the Vídeo de creación experimental (Creative experimental video) workshop coordinated by Venezuelan artist Iván Candeo, part of the Permanent Education programme at Escola Massana, Centre d’Art i Disseny.

Video is an effective medium for experimentation, as it is able to “speak” about anything from ceramics to performance, from photographic portraiture to silent cinema, or from the pornographic gaze to the body. However, this must be done by ignoring the use it is generally put to in today’s world, revealing it as a utilitarian instrument, but with the understanding that it may be appropriated, becoming an indeterminate place from which to reflect.

We will be screening works by Laura Ferrer Alcoceba, Ana Lucia Garcia Hoefken, Ester Jordana Lluch, Albert Mach, Sofia Milà, Anna Roura and Teo Ruffini Maiques.

PROGRAMA

LAURA FERRER ALCOCEBA

En tránsito
2021_8 min

As immersed as we are in our screens these days, where are we planning to go with them? How about using them to observe from inside a camera? The video explores the medium from both the inside and the outside, rethinking the windows through which we look.

ESTER JORDANA LLUCH

Scrolling Modern Times
2021_10:45 min

Arqueologías del imagoceno is a piece of audiovisual research that explores the visuality regimes linked to the appearance of technical images. Scrolling Modern Times effects a contrast between the visuality regimes of cinematography and those of new technologies, using scroll. It’s an intervention on the film Modern Times (Charles Chaplin, 1936), which also contrasts the Fordian society the film was denouncing in 1936 with our current neoliberal societies.

ANNA ROURA

I am
2021_4:44 min

I perform an action in front of the camera where I remove, one by one, a series of tee-shirts printed with portraits of me from each year of my life.  By means of this ritual – which I perform every year on my birthday – I become aware of the passing of time and how my body changes over time. Nevertheless, there’s an unchanging desire within me which is the longing – the need! – to divest myself of layers, to deconstruct myself, in order to embrace new (dissident) ways of being, thinking, loving and creating. In short, “one more year, one less layer”.

SOFIA MILÀ

Non Consent
2021_4:40 min

Using images recorded without consent in public transport taken from porn portals I am publicising a truth: there exists a male gaze that sexualises and objectivises us at all times, without our permission, to the absurd extreme of discovering such images on portals such as XVideos or Pornhub.

ALBERT MACH

Uvece
2021_12:30 min (versión reducida)

The subject of this performance takes over the space, the objects and the video image, creating, from the homely environment of a bathroom, a completely absurd action for and with the camera. Who hasn’t played with their body in front of a mirror?

ANA LUCIA GARCIA HOEFKEN

(Re)membranza colectiva
2021_7 min (extractos)

(Re)membranza colectiva aims to reveal the material identity of household objects generally forgotten, using a sensorial feedback between the object, clay, touch and representation. During the process, the familiarity of the object that we have constructed in our minds disappears, showing each object’s transformation. This video is an opportunity to relate with material objects by encouraging new associations and meanings.

TEO RUFFINI MAIQUES

Tic Tac Tic
2021_3:43 min

Tic Tac Tic is the search for the relation between an object, the space of digital images and movement. A change in the relation that establishes the movement of a pendulum with the digital visual field. It’s an experiment that explores the versatility of the digital format in which an image behaves according to the movement of the object within the physical space: the image of the object moves like the object.

FLUX CLUB celebrates its 12th season at the Antic Teatre and the 21st anniversary of its creation in 2000.

This is a fortnightly video programme that reflects the vitality of video creation in Barcelona. It hosts all kinds of sessions with screenings, video performances, and debates offering direct contact between audiences and video creators. The sessions focus on a range of subjects, from monographics of well-known directors to specific themes such as video dance and video poetry, or collective sessions dedicated to emerging authors.

The programme is open to everything currently going on in the field of video in Barcelona, complementing the FLUX Video Auteur Festival with its content and extending its sphere of influence beyond the dates of the festival, which takes place in December.

HABITUAL VIDEO TEAM is a non-profit association that has as its main objective the promotion of activities related to the visual arts, specifically, video art: www.habitualvideoteam.org.

A fundamental area of their work is the organisation of festivals, cycles and video shows, such as the FLUX Video Auteur Festival: www.fluxfestival.org, and the INFLUX Audiovisual Performing Arts Festival: www.influxfestival.org.

Another area of Habitual Video Team’s activity is video documentation of cultural events mainly related to experimental music and poetry performances. In 2012 they launched the SUMMA project in order to convert this audiovisual heritage (more than 1000 recordings) into a non-profit online video archive: www.summa-hvt.org.
